Fairbanks Charities

The Breast Cancer Detection Center of Alaska was founded in Fairbanks in 1976 and has been guided by the mission to increase awareness of the survivability of breast cancer and the benefits of early detection by delivering screening services and educational programs throughout the state of Alaska. We serve patients in Fairbanks and on-site in Alaskan communities where breast cancer screening services are not readily available.

The BCDC of Alaska offers state of the art 3D Tomosynthesis technology to harness superior quality images in a warm, comfortable, and calming environment.

The impact of BCDC Mammography Assistance Program stands alone in geographic diversity by providing inclusive breast cancer screenings in Interior, Southcentral, Southeast, and Southwest Alaska.

Your donation ensures, that Alaskans are not denied breast cancer screening services because of geographical and/or financial barriers to life-saving preventative health care. In supporting BCDC, we can continue to decrease the impact of breast cancer on geographically diverse Alaskan communities together.

Alaska has the fastest growing senior population of all the states at 63%.  These amazing Pioneers have built the wonderful community we call home.  In the Fairbanks North Star Borough, our 80 and older cohort is currently 1,800 and will grow to over 5,000 by 2030, which is a 211% increase.  Your Fairbanks Senior Center is actively solidifying imperative base services to help our beloved Pioneers remain living at home.  The Fairbanks Senior Center calls this an “Aging in Place Movement” which consists of home modification, wellness checks, home-delivered and congregate meals, socialization, exercise and educational classes, homemaker services, and connection to programs that enhance financial security.   Your donation helps our Fairbanks Pioneers who were essential in building our Golden Heart City!

The Resource Center Parents and Children (RCPC) has grown in size, strength, and commitment since 1973, when it was started by a small group of concerned Fairbanks citizens who met as the Fairbanks Child Protection Task Force (FCPTF) to discuss the problems of child abuse and neglect in the Fairbanks community.

Over the years our programs and services have varied; however, all have focused on the same mission. The prevention of child abuse and neglect begins with strengthening the family structure, helping parents with parenting skills, and providing a safe place for parents to share and deal with parenting issues. The Resource Center for Parents and Children has been successful due to quality staff, programs and countless volunteers and social service agency partners.  Your donation helps support our mission here in Fairbanks.

In 1982, during a Recession, a small group of concerned community members noticed an interesting issue: people were struggling to put food on their tables, yet grocery stores had excess food that was being thrown away. After doing research, they discovered that a food bank could collect the surplus food from the grocery stores and then distribute it to the people in need. The Fairbanks Community Food Bank was then born. In the first year, the dedicated founders were able to collect a few thousand pounds of food and redistribute it to a couple hundred people.

By 1985, the organization had grown enough to hire an executive director and by 1990, we were collecting 300,000 pounds of surplus food in the community each year. We used 4,000 volunteer hours to do the daily work.

In 1990, the operations moved to 517 Gaffney Road and steadily that facility grew from 2,000 sq. ft. to 6,500 sq. ft. Once the collection and distribution of food went over one million pounds, it was apparent that another move needed to occur. How could that happen, since the work of the Food Bank is to collect free food in the community and give it away free? Where were the dollars to make a change? Dennis and Mary Wise decided that was something they could do. A new facility was designed and erected, and we moved into a turn-key operation in February, 1999.

The current facility, located in Fairbanks, Alaska at 725 26th Avenue, is 50,000 sq. ft. We currently collect and distribute three million pounds of local surplus food. We still do the work primarily with volunteers (nearly 25,000 hours each year). We were also able to give over one million pounds of locally collected food to about 100 different agencies this last year, helping keep their costs down and their services up!

Local independent food banks are great! We recycle local surplus food so that no one needs to be hungry in the Tanana Valley. Thank you for 4 decades of serving this community!

At the Armed Services YMCA of Alaska, we believe our military and their families deserve unwavering support, a sense of belonging, and a community that stands by them. That’s why our mission is to enhance the lives of military members and their families in spirit, mind, and body through programs relevant to the unique challenges of military life.

ASYMCA’s low-cost and no-cost programs support our nation’s fiercest defenders of the Arctic in their daily lives, allowing them to remain focused on mission readiness. By working closely with military leadership and state partners, we are ensuring that our nation's defenders have the resources and support they need to thrive. Our work include early learning programs, access to food and household goods, family strengthening opportunities, and more.

ASYMCA programs are designed to provide a welcoming and supportive landing pad for service members and military families who are stationed in the Last Frontier. This crucial work cannot be done alone—collaboration is the backbone of our efforts. Your support is vital, and we invite you to join us in our efforts. Together, we can continue to build a strong, supportive community for those who protect and serve our nation.

iDE is a global team of 1,200 changemakers coming from diverse backgrounds within international development and the private sector. What we all have in common is the belief that one entrepreneur can change their community and millions can change the world.

We are driven to end poverty but we don’t do simple handouts of supplies or cash. Instead, we believe that everyone has the ability to increase their livelihoods and build long-term resilience by their own accord. They may just need training or connections to suppliers and customers. That’s where we come in and what we mean when we say we are “powering entrepreneurs to end poverty.”

UNICEF works across more than 190 countries and territories, to reach the most disadvantaged children and adolescents – and to protect the rights of every child, everywhere. We do whatever it takes to help children survive, thrive and fulfill their potential, from early childhood through adolescence.

The world’s largest provider of vaccines, we support child health and nutrition, safe water and sanitation, quality education and skill building, HIV prevention and treatment for mothers and babies, and the protection of children and adolescents from violence and exploitation.

Before, during and after humanitarian emergencies, UNICEF is on the ground, bringing lifesaving help and hope to children and families. Non-political and impartial, we are never neutral when it comes to defending children’s rights and safeguarding their lives and futures.

And we never give up.
